I read pretty much every post in the Soundblaster thread and found out that many versions of the SB16 had a "hanging note bug" with daugthers.

Now I was wondering if this issue also affects midi devices connected to the external midi port (the joystick port)?

EDIT: I found a thread on VOGONS that it also affects the external midi port. But still need some help with my other question please...

I also read that there are issues with MT-32 and that you should use a dedicated midi card (like one from Roland). But what about external General midi devices? Would a Soundblaster midi port work?

I am getting a few mainboards and most have only a single ISA slot. So I will have to make the most out of this situation...

Thanks guys!

A genuine MIDI port supports "intelligent mode" while a SoundBlaster MIDI port does not.

If I understand the implications of this correctly, what matters most is if the software you're using expects hardware that fully implements the MIDI specification.  Your external device should be compatible in any MIDI mode, but software is notoriously inflexible.

I'm not sure it's relevant here, but - the MT32 is not fully compatible with every game supporting "Roland". Some of them make use of the 33 extra sound effects found in the LAPC-I/CM-32L, others transmit sysex faster than what a first generation MT-32 can handle.

I have a Roland MPU401AT back in europe, but lately I haven't seen any such cards for sale...

Plenty of Sound Canvas though...

Now I am aware that there are soundblaster clones, that do not have this hanging note bug.

Are there clones that have some form of soundblaster compatibility (for sound effects), are ISA and have a intelligent mode midi port?
