Does any one have a GUS clone? There is not so much info in the internet about them. My idea is to put everything we know together, like: is it fully comapatible with real GUS, any advantagies and disadvantagies...
I've just got a Dynasonix Pro. It's being tested by me right know. So far it has good drivers for Win98. Demos are ok too. But has some problems with DOS games because it will not allow me to put IRQ less then 10. Duke3D says that it must be lower. Changing iw.ini is not working - after rebooting it puts old IRQ back. The same with Device Manager.
I will keep posting.

I've got a Primax Soundstorm which is also a GUS clone. There are 2 versions, a version that needs 4x128kb chips as an upgrade to 1MB and one that needs a single 512kb (videocard-style) ram chip as upgrade.
I have the latter one (See here) and as far as I've used it (with only a few demo's and games like Doom, descent, duke3d and rise of the triad) it works just as well as a real GUS.

Even the software that comes with these Primax cards is exactly the same as Gravis provided, i.e. it is Gravis UltraSound software.

Of the card and box?
Click here for pics of those.

And yes, it worked fine in real DOS (6.22) for me.

The last, best (and I thought - ONLY) clone had the GF1 and a SBpro compatible chip as well.  AWESOME compatibility!

Reminder to all - I still have loads of 256x4 DRAM chips for all your Gravis Ultrasound needs!!  Cheesy

Yeah, clones of the Gravis Ultrasound Extreme, that additional to GF1 includes the ESS1688 codec for SBPro compatibility.

I have one, but added into fully packed machine with AWE32 and LAPC-I, I couldn't get the ESS1688 to work without crashes. Ultrasound part worked perfectly, so some overlapping interrupts, addresses etc. occurred. I was going to try that in an empty 486 machine when I have time...

Have the Primax Soundstorm too
What sucks with it that you can't change all it's resource settings like you can on a real Gus so the card will conflict with other sound cards in your system

I've only tested it as a stand-alone soundcard. For using GUS next to others the ACE is usually the best option anyway. Smiley

Hopeapaa,
You are lucky! I've looked for Extreme for a long time and can't find anywhere.

My version of the card (which looks like this) does have jumpers for PORT, IRQ and DMA as well as enabling and disabling the different CD-ROM interfaces on the card.

It has peacefully coexisted with a Soundblaster AWE and a Roland SCC-1 in my machine.

From my experience, every software that is compatible with a "real" GUS runs on the Primax as well - the card even works with the very same drivers.

I have a GUS Extreme as well and I have to say that the ESS Audiodrive works very well for Soundblaster Pro compatibility. I have yet to find a single game that refuses to work with it.

Of course, it is best used in systems that don't already have some kind of Soundblaster installed.

Why would you put two GUS in one PC?

I'll tell you why!  (okay... my memory's a bit fuzzy...)  I could've sworn there was a tracker or player that would double your polyphony with two GUS cards working in tandem.  Anyone remember it?   Huh

Cubic Player has a "Double GUS" feature, it can be used for a quadraphonic speaker setup: Cubic Player documentation - Gravis Ultrasound

Hold on! Sample files were made for 1MB of RAM. Even if I have 2MB it will not sound better. Or there are 2MB patches for this?

Pictures of my Kouwell Virtuoso. Seems to be widely unknown to google, as the only mention I could find was on this one czech GUS page.

Specs are virtually the same as the Gravis Ultrasound Classic and the design seems to be nearly identical to the Primax Ultrasys, except for this card having two GAL chips rather than one. Supposedly there's also another version, having 2 SOJ chips for memory, rather than the mixture of DIP and SOJ as seen on my card. The card itself doesn't have any identification marks (PCB name/FCC ID/etc.) and the only clue about its' name I have is the manual that came with it.

I also have a Core Dynamics DynaSonix 3-D. Pictures will follow later once my CCD capable scanner arrives. That card seems to be basically a GUS PnP with a green PCB.
