Hello all,
I just won a Roland CM-64 from ebay and it looks like its DOA. Sad

I have a Roland MT 32 hooked up to a USB to midi device on my MAC. The Roland MT32 works fine under dosbox. I've used the same midi cable and output to my speakers to test the CM64 and fire up King Quest 6 but no music.

The Midi message LED is on always as with the power LED.

I've even tested it under Logic Audio and no go. I've tried connecting headphones to the socket and it makes a strange humming sound.

How can I know for sure its buggered? IS there a dos program to test it?

It seems to me that your power supply doesn't meet the requirements of the CM-64. That's how my CM-64 behaved when not getting enough power. I would try it with another power supply.

Exactly right. Used the power adapter from my MT32 and it works fine. I guess not enough power.

Cheers,

What PSU did you use? I used PSU from SC-55 which was 900mAm and it worked fine on my CM-64. The one from CM-64 was 1200mAm.

I tried the one from the Roland MT32 1200mA. Works great. Just wondering what games were written to use the extra sounds on the CM64. Anyone know?

Thanks,
Rob

If you're talking about the 33 extra sound effects found in the LAPC-I (and CM-32L/CM-64/CM-500), there are many such games, in fact, most non-adventure titles released around 1991-1994 use them. The most popular example is perhaps Ultima Underworld.

AFAIK, no PC game ever used the CM-32P PCM part of the CM-64. Only a few Japanese games for non-PC platforms, like Gemini Wing for the X68000.

Some cheesy games which support those sound effects:

Supaplex
Overlord/Supremacy
Elite Plus
B-17 Flying Fortress (in-game sound effects)
Race Drivin' (may not use the sound effects, but definitely sounds wrong on an MT-32)
The Godfather
Predator 2
Pinball Dreams (early version with Roland support)
Leisure Suit Larry 5 (believe it or not!)
