Anyone know the differences? Or is there a documentation out there explaining the SCI10 picture format? I ask because I wonder how difficult it would be to create custom SCI10 picture resources from a conventional graphic format like BMP or something. One think I believe is true is that Pic resources don't contain a palette, right? I thought of looking at the SCI Studio VGA source code to see if I could figure something out. But I couldn't find anything. I also tried opening the BMP and Pic resource of the same image in a hex editor and comparing them but that got me nowhere either.

Every now and then I get the urge to understand programming a little more. Though I can never find a good starting point so I become randomly interested in all these different aspects.

There is some information here:

http://www-plan.cs.colorado.edu/creichen/freesci/sci.pdf

The chapter titled "The SCI0 and SCI01 pic resource" relates the relevant part.  Apparently there are palettes involved.

There might be a better resource elsewhere that describes the data format directly, but having the code to could give you a head start if you're looking to write a converter.

Yeah, I actually found that. But it only documents SIC0 pic resources and doesn't go into any great detail about SCI1 pic resources beyond basic information.
