Is there any way to check the date of last visit so that i know which threads/posts are new, cause the "new posts" feature may not include the post written while i was online.

Don't know if this will help you, but I usually click on "View the most recent posts on the forum" link at the "Forum Stats" section (just below "New Posts"). The results shows dates for each recent post.
