The mp3 encoding library, LAME, was updated to version 3.98 last month (July 4, 2008, actually).

Thoughts on it?  I remember that Alistair was quite fond of 3.98 Beta 6 (or was it Beta 5?) and liked it much over 3.97.  Now the that release is finalized, and work is apparently underway on 3.99 and/or 4.0.

You might like to check out some of these threads on Hydrogenaudio. From what I can tell, it's a small improvement over 3.97, although it also tends to produce somewhat higher bitrates.
